Does this card charge an annual fee?
Things worth knowing
Canceling never removes the account from your report immediately
Closed accounts in good standing stay on your credit report for up to 10 years. The history doesn't vanish — but you lose the available credit limit right away.
Closing cards doesn't help your Chase 5/24 count
A card you closed still counts toward 5/24 if it was opened in the last 24 months. Canceling a card you opened recently won't free up a slot.
Utilization is the fastest-moving credit factor
Closing a card reduces your total available credit, which raises your utilization ratio across all balances. Even a temporary spike can drop your score noticeably.
Best time to call for retention: 30–60 days before renewal
The annual fee hasn't posted yet, so you have leverage. Once the fee posts, you have 30 days to cancel for a full refund at most issuers — that's your second window.
Product changes typically require 12 months of card membership
Most issuers won't allow a product change until you've held the card for at least a year. You also generally can't change to a card with a sign-up bonus you haven't already earned.
You can usually get a prorated refund if you cancel early
If the annual fee just posted and you cancel within 30 days (some issuers give more), you typically get the fee refunded. After that window, you won't get it back.
