5/24 Rule

Chase will generally deny most personal card applications if you have opened 5 or more personal credit cards (from any bank) within the past 24 months. The count is a rolling 24-month window, not a calendar year.

  • Counts toward 5/24: All personal credit cards, authorized user cards, and retail store cards from any issuer
  • Does NOT count: Chase business cards and most other issuers' business cards after approval — however, Capital One and Discover small-business cards DO count
  • Business card applications still require being under 5/24 to be approved; they just don't add to your count afterward
  • Authorized user cards CAN be disputed off your credit report if needed to reduce your 5/24 count
Check Your 5/24 Status
Add every personal credit card you've opened in the last 2 years, including authorized user cards. Business cards generally don't count — most issuers (Chase, AmEx, Citi, Barclays, US Bank) don't report business cards to your personal credit, so Chase can't see them. However, Capital One and Discover do report business cards to personal credit, so those will count.

2/30 Rule

Chase limits approvals to a maximum of 2 Chase cards (personal and business combined) within any rolling 30-day window. Applying for a third within that window will result in denial regardless of your 5/24 status.

Sapphire Family Rule — Major Change (June 2025)

Update — June 2025

The 48-month Sapphire family bonus restriction was eliminated as of June 23, 2025. Chase now allows holding both Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve simultaneously. The time-based rule has been replaced with algorithmic eligibility — factors include prior bonuses received, cards opened and closed, and undisclosed criteria. In practice, this means one intro bonus per specific card product maximum, but enforcement is not strictly time-based.

Chase Ink Business — Lifetime Restrictions (November 2025)

Update — November 2025

New lifetime language added to no-annual-fee Ink cards. Ink Cash and Ink Unlimited cardholders may not qualify for a welcome bonus if they have ever held this card or any other Chase business card without an annual fee. The Ink Preferred and Sapphire Reserve for Business now carry a one-time-only bonus per card. Enforcement appears inconsistent — applicants can still apply and check whether an eligibility popup appears before a hard pull on some channels.

Reconsideration

Chase maintains a reconsideration line. Moving available credit from an existing Chase card to the new application is a common path to approval after an initial denial. Chase will not approve more total credit than it deems appropriate relative to your income, so redistribution is often necessary before a second card is added.

Once-Per-Lifetime Welcome Bonus

Amex restricts welcome bonuses to once per card product, ever. Current language: “you may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this card.” The “may not” phrasing introduces some discretion, but in practice the restriction is broadly enforced.

  • Exception — NLL (No Lifetime Language) offers: Targeted offers delivered via email, the AmEx login portal, or direct mail that omit the lifetime restriction language. These bypass the block and allow earning a bonus again on a card you've previously held.
  • Exception — targeted pre-approval offers: Cards presented without lifetime language in the terms may indicate targeted eligibility.
  • Potential 7-year reset: Anecdotally reported but not officially confirmed by AmEx. Do not rely on this.

Family Rule

Amex groups certain cards into families — holding any card in the family can block the welcome bonus on others in it. The rules are asymmetric for the core MR charge card family:

  • Green Card: Blocked if you’ve held the Gold Card or any Platinum Card (including Schwab and Morgan Stanley variants)
  • Gold Card: Blocked if you’ve held any Platinum Card. Having held the Green does not block the Gold.
  • Platinum Card: Blocked only by other Platinum variants (Schwab, Morgan Stanley). Having held the Gold or Green does not block the Platinum.

The optimal application order is Green → Gold → Platinum: each step doesn’t close the door on the next, but reversing the order does. For co-brand families (Hilton, Delta, Marriott, etc.), the restriction is symmetric — holding any card in the family blocks the bonus on all others in it.

Upgrade / Downgrade Block

Accepting a card via an upgrade offer (e.g., upgrading from Gold to Platinum) blocks the standard new cardmember bonus — even if you have never received the bonus as a new applicant. Avoid upgrade offers when the SUB on a fresh application is your primary goal.

Pop-Up Jail

Before processing a hard pull, Amex may display a pop-up indicating you are ineligible for the welcome bonus. You can back out at this point with no credit score impact.

  • Common triggers: High recent application velocity, low spending on existing AmEx cards, high card velocity
  • How to escape: Wait several months, increase spending on existing AmEx cards, and limit applications to once every 6 months rather than every 90 days

Application Velocity Rules

  • Credit cards: Max 2 new AmEx credit cards per 90 days; max 1 per 5 days
  • Charge cards (Platinum, Gold, Green + all business variants): Max 1 per 90 days — charge cards do not count toward the credit card velocity limit

Card Holding Limits

  • Credit card limit: 5 — personal and business combined in a single pool. Co-brand cards (Delta, Hilton, Marriott) are classified as credit cards and count toward this limit.
  • Charge card limit: 10 — Platinum, Gold, Green and all their business variants (personal + business combined)
  • Authorized user and employee cards do not count toward either limit
  • As of mid-2026 there are scattered reports the 5-card credit limit may be loosening for some customers — not a confirmed policy change (YMMV)

Hard Pull

Typically Experian only.

2/3/4 Rule

Bank of America limits approvals to 2 cards in any 30 days, 3 cards in any 12 months, and 4 cards in any 24 months. All windows are rolling, not calendar-based.

  • Counts only BofA-branded consumer cards; business cards generally do not count toward the limit
  • Authorized user cards do not count

Preferred Rewards

Holding $20,000 or more in combined BofA or Merrill accounts (qualifying for the Preferred Rewards program) can improve approval odds near velocity limits. It is not a guarantee — applicants near or at the 2/3/4 thresholds have still been denied.

Hard Pull

Typically Experian or TransUnion depending on region.

8/65 Application Velocity Rule

Citi approves a maximum of 1 card application every 8 days and a maximum of 2 cards within any 65-day window. Both limits apply to personal and business cards combined.

48-Month Bonus Rule (Per Card)

You can earn a welcome bonus on a Citi card if you have not received the bonus on that exact card in the past 48 months. The clock starts when the bonus was earned, not when the card was opened or closed. Each card product tracks independently — some families share restrictions as specified in card terms.

Inquiry Sensitivity

Citi is one of the more inquiry-sensitive issuers. The traditional guideline was 6 or more inquiries on Citi's pull bureau within 6 months leading to denial.

Tightened 2025–2026

Tightened in 2025–2026 for premium cards: The Citi Strata Premier now applies a stricter 3/6 threshold — 3 or more inquiries in 6 months may result in denial. Citi pulls the bureau with the lowest inquiry count first. An inquiry from another bank within 5 days of your Citi application may also trigger denial.

Hard Pull

Typically Equifax or Experian depending on region.

1/6 Rule

Capital One generally will not approve a new card within 6 months of opening another Capital One card. Personal and business cards are counted together in a single pool.

2/30 Rule

Capital One may deny an application if you have applied for a Capital One credit card 2 or more times in the past 30 days. This is separate from the 1/6 rule — both limits apply independently, so you can be caught by either one.

2-Card Maximum

Once you hold 2 Capital One personal cards, additional personal applications are typically declined regardless of wait time. Enforcement is broadly consistent, though occasional exceptions are reported.

Triple Bureau Pull

Triple bureau pull

Capital One hard pulls all three credit bureaus on every application — Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion simultaneously. This is a significant cost compared to single-bureau issuers. A Capital One application effectively uses up one inquiry on every bureau, whereas most other issuers pull only one. Factor this in when sequencing applications.

Venture Family 48-Month Rule (Added October 2025)

Earning a welcome bonus on any Venture family card (VentureOne, Venture, Venture X) locks you out of all three products for 48 months from the date the bonus was earned. The three cards are treated as a single family for bonus eligibility purposes.

Annual Fee Policy

Capital One does not refund annual fees after they post. If you plan to downgrade or cancel a Capital One card, do so before the annual fee charges — not after.

Authorized User Cards and 5/24

Authorized user cards from any bank count toward Chase's 5/24 count. If you were added as an AU on someone else's card and want it removed from your 5/24 count, you can dispute it with the credit bureaus — it can be removed without affecting the primary cardholder's account.

Business Cards and Personal Credit Reports

  • Do NOT report to personal credit: Chase, AmEx, Citi, Barclays, US Bank business cards
  • DO report to personal credit: Capital One and Discover business cards — these can affect your personal credit profile and 5/24 count

Hard Pull Timing

Some issuers soft-pull first and only hard pull upon approval — not on application. Same-day applications at the same issuer can sometimes result in a single combined hard pull rather than two separate inquiries (Barclays is the most reliably documented case of this).

Reconsideration Lines

Most major issuers maintain reconsideration lines where you can speak with an underwriter after an initial denial. Moving available credit from an existing card at the same bank is often an option offered during reconsideration. This is most effective at Chase, Citi, and Bank of America.

Credit Score Impact

  • A hard pull typically causes approximately a 5-point drop in credit score
  • New account average age impact fades within 12 months
  • Hard inquiries remain on your report for 2 years but lose most scoring impact after 12 months

General Velocity Guidance

Most experienced applicants target no more than 2–3 new cards per 6 months to avoid algorithmic flags across issuers. Exceeding this cadence increases risk of pop-up jail (Amex), denial for “too many recent accounts,” or reduced approval odds regardless of whether you technically satisfy each issuer's stated rules.
